What is the play Creditors about?
In an isolated seaside hotel, struggling painter Adi meets Gustav, a mysterious and magnetic stranger who reignites Adi’s creativity and inspires him to try creating in a new medium. Forging an immediate and intimate connection, what first seems like a chance meeting between the two men takes a darker turn when Gustav becomes infatuated with Tekla, Adi’s charming wife. What begins as a casual evening together soon twists into a web of seduction and deception, with revelations coming to light that may just destroy the lives of all involved.
Originally written in Swedish in 1888, then in Danish in 1889, Creditors was considered by Strindberg himself to be his most emotionally mature work.
