What is the play Othello about?

When Othello, a Black general in the military, passes over his friend and confidant Iago for promotion, choosing the more junior soldier Cassio instead. Envious of Othello’s success and furious at being snubbed, the ambitious Iago plots Othello’s downfall - he will lead Othello to believe that his beloved wife, Desdemona, is conducting an affair with Cassio. With the unwitting aid of his wife, Emilia, Desdemona’s servant, Iago sets his plan into motion. What follows is an explosive series of events that can only end in tragedy…

Othello is believed to have been written around 1603 and is one of Shakespeare’s best-known plays. The play has received many productions and stage, film, TV and audio adaptations. The roles of Othello and Iago are two of the largest in Shakespeare’s canon, with many actors eager to tackle the iconic characters. Previous Othellos have included Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lenny Henry and Denzel Washington.
